Oakland woman dies in accident , FROM
STAFF REPORTS
SAN LEANDRO — A 44-year-old Oakland woman
died Tuesday morning while possibly racing two
other cars on eastbound Interstate 580, the
California Highway Patrol reported. The Alameda
County coroner was withholding the name of the
victim until relatives could be notified. The
accident was reported to the CHP at 6:21 a.m.
and blocked all four lanes for nearly two hours,
authorities said.
When police arrived to investigate the crash,
officers found a black 2003 Nissan 350Z lying on
its roof in the far left lane of eastbound I-580
just west of the 150th Avenue off-ramp.
The driver was trapped inside the heavily
damaged Nissan and had to be removed by Alameda
County firefighters.
A preliminary investigation indicates the car
was traveling at high speed when the driver lost
control for an unknown reason and spun
clockwise, causing the car to slam into the
metal guard rail. The vehicle became airborne
and overturned, coming to rest on the right
shoulder of the highway, the CHP said. The
driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses told CHP investigators that the
Nissan, a dark-colored Camaro and a red Mazda
Miata were racing prior to the accident. The
driver of the Nissan may have been involved in a
collision with one of the other two vehicles
before crashing, the CHP said.
The accident remains under investigation.
Anyone who witnessed the crash is encouraged to
call the CHP's Castro Valley office at (510)
581-9028. |
